“Points of Connection” Catalog
By Artist Kylie Sivley
Collection of available originals from her solo show “Points of Connection”
Kylie Sivley is a Houston creator, who strives to work alongside other creatives, curators, and businesses to bring local spaces to life. In the recent past, her work has been on display at Lawndale Art Center, Throughline Gallery, Notsuoh, and more. Her works are currently on display at Soul Freak, Rosewater, and Sundance Studio. She is currently expanding her reach, finding new collectors and establishments to enjoy her originals.
“Points of Connection” is a personal introspection with acrylic paint that is intended to help liberate feelings of guilt and shame around making and viewing art that is openly queer and fetishistic. The artist gives a stage to an often closeted reverence and affinity for the taboo and sensational. The works come together to form an intricate web of community with local photographers, models, rope artists in the present as well as to the past through early 1900’s photography references. The artist invites the viewer to notice other access points to connection that are present throughout the showing, including but not limited to, the dialogue between the artist and the viewer, the interpersonal/intrapersonal connection between the subject and their surroundings, and the artists’ connection to her own personal development in the creation of the artwork. Shoes, ropes, latex, lovers, books, and religious iconography all serve as physical conduits, connecting the subject/audience/artist to themselves and to those around them.
Process: Using full body acrylics the artist researches how color, composition, and brushwork interact to create illusions of texture, form, and atmosphere. Each painting contains a multitude of medium based experiments with the goal of observing where abstraction transforms into more realistic representations in her work. Throughout the process, some pieces in the series developed into smooth hyper realistic gradients and shapes while others maintained a painterly quality with visible brushstrokes and abrupt color changes. The expressive strokes inform the atmosphere in each work, giving an extensive range of visual texture data to experience.
